YOUR DISNEY WORLD VACATION PLANNING TIMELINE

Before we jump into the checklist, one quick note: Disney's booking windows, offers, ticket rules, and available experiences can change. The timeline below is organized around how far away your trip is, rather than specific calendar months, so you can use it whenever you're ready to start planning.

Some families book well over a year in advance, while others pull together a wonderful Disney vacation in just a few months. Start wherever you are, work through the steps that still apply, and don't stress about the ones you've already completed!

12 MONTHS BEFORE YOUR DISNEY WORLD VACATION: START DREAMING & PLANNING

This is the fun part! You're dreaming about castle views, attractions, Mickey-shaped treats, and all the memories you're going to make together. Before getting caught up in the little details, it's time to figure out what kind of Disney vacation makes the most sense for your family.

Your checklist:

  • Choose your approximate travel dates. Start with your family's school calendar, work schedules, and any important events. Consider weather, seasonal celebrations, and typical school-break crowds when comparing dates.

  • Decide how long to stay. Four park days give you time to visit all four main parks, but don't forget to leave room for a little downtime! Our family's sweet spot is 6–7 nights, which gives us time for all four parks plus a Disney Down Day to enjoy the resort pool, explore Disney Property, or simply slow things down. We highly recommend working in a rest day rather than hitting the parks every single day.

  • Set a realistic vacation budget. Include your resort, tickets, transportation, meals, Lightning Lane purchases if desired, souvenirs, and a little breathing room for extras.

  • Start researching resorts. Think about transportation, pool time, room size, dining options, and how much time you'll spend at the hotel. Your resort is more than a place to sleep, especially when you're traveling with kids!

  • Discuss your family's must-dos. Does everyone want to ride the biggest attractions? Meet characters? See fireworks? Enjoy themed dining? Get everyone involved and plan your trip together.

  • Set up your My Disney Experience account. Create your account early and get familiar with the app! It's where you'll manage your plans, tickets, reservations, and more. Setting it up well in advance gives you time to explore the features before your trip and be ready when those important booking windows open!

  • Start a Disney savings plan. Even small savings can add up! Consider buying discounted Disney gift cards through Target or Costco to put toward eligible vacation expenses. Also, check out Costco Travel for Disney vacation packages that may offer great value for your family!

Our tip: Start a shared note or spreadsheet to keep your dates, estimated costs, resort options, must-do attractions, and booking deadlines all in one place. You'll thank yourself later! And don't forget YouTube! Watch park walkthroughs, dining reviews, and videos of attractions and experiences. It's a fun way to get the whole family excited and let the kids help plan their Disney adventure!

9-11 MONTHS BEFORE: NARROW DOWN YOUR DATES AND RESORT

Now it's time to turn those vacation dreams into an actual plan. You don't need to know every restaurant you'll visit or every attraction you'll ride, but you should start making the big decisions.

Your checklist:

  • Compare resort options and pricing. Look at the total cost of your stay rather than the nightly rate alone. Transportation, flights, room configuration, and convenience can all affect your experience.

  • Check Disney's current booking availability. Review available resort packages, room-only options, ticket prices, and any offers that apply to your dates.

  • Book your resort when you're ready. Disney booking availability and policies vary, so check the terms carefully before confirming your reservation.

  • Research transportation to Orlando. Compare flights, driving, and airport transfers. If you're flying, consider arrival times that give your family enough time to get settled and enjoy some resort time on the arrival day.

  • Check passports and identification if needed. For domestic travel, confirm that everyone has the identification required for your transportation plans. International visitors should check passport and entry requirements.

  • Look into travel insurance. Consider what protection you may want for unexpected cancellations, delays, or other covered disruptions.

If staying at a Disney Deluxe Resort is on your wish list, this is also a good time to explore your options. Our guide to saving on Disney Deluxe Resorts with DVC points can help you understand this money-saving alternative booking strategy.

Remember: You don't have to choose the most expensive resort to have a fantastic vacation. The right resort is the one that works for your family's priorities and budget.

6-8 MONTHS BEFORE: BUILD THE FRAMEWORK FOR YOUR TRIP

With your major decisions underway, it's time to start thinking about how your vacation will actually flow. This is where a little organization can save you a lot of backtracking later. You don't need a minute-by-minute itinerary, but having a rough plan will help you make better decisions about tickets, dining, and how many park days to schedule.

Your checklist:

  • Decide which parks you want to visit. Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom each bring something different to the table! Consider your kids' ages, interests, favorite characters, and ride height requirements when planning. Magic Kingdom has the most attractions, so depending on your family's priorities, you may want to dedicate more than one day to it.

  • Choose your ticket type. Compare standard one-park-per-day tickets with Park Hopper options. Think about whether your family will genuinely benefit from visiting multiple parks in one day.

  • Map out your park days. Consider park hours, transportation, special events, and where you want a break. Keep your plan flexible enough to adjust as details become available.

  • Decide whether to schedule a non-park day. We love giving families permission to slow down! Pool time, resort exploring, Disney Springs, and a relaxed meal can be a welcome change from early mornings and busy park days.

  • Start researching dining experiences. Make a short list of restaurants that are important to your family, especially character meals and popular table-service experiences.

  • Check for special events and seasonal offerings. Confirm dates and details through Disney's official website before building your plans around a particular event.

Not sure where to begin with your park days? Head over to our Disney World Tips Guide for more help with park planning, resort choices, dining, and making the most of your time.

Our tip: Prioritize the experiences that matter most to your family, then build around them. Trying to do absolutely everything is a recipe for exhaustion, and nobody wants a vacation that feels like a race!

3-5 MONTHS BEFORE: FILL IN THE DETAILS

Now your trip should be starting to feel real! This is a great time to review your reservations, work through the details, and make sure you're prepared for the important booking windows ahead.

Depending on when you booked, you may already have completed some of these steps. That's perfectly fine!

Your checklist:

  • Review your resort and ticket reservations. Double-check dates, guest names, room details, ticket validity, and confirmation information.

  • Book or finalize transportation. If you're flying, review baggage rules, seat assignments, and arrival plans. If you're driving, map your route and consider overnight stops if needed.

  • Make your dining wish list a priority list. Decide which meals are worth planning around and which can stay flexible.

  • Research Lightning Lane options. Learn how Multi Pass and Single Pass work, which attractions interest your family, and what purchases may make sense for your plans.

  • Check attraction height requirements. This can help prevent disappointment and make it easier to decide which rides each family member can enjoy.

  • Double-check your planning party! Make sure everyone is set up correctly in My Disney Experience and your family’s accounts are linked. A quick check now can save you a headache later when it's time to book dining reservations and Lightning Lane selections!

  • Start watching for relevant offers. Check official Disney promotions and compare the terms against your existing reservation before changing anything.

  • Plan your spending money. Set expectations for souvenirs, snacks, special experiences, and other extras. Giving kids a souvenir budget can help avoid negotiating every time you pass a gift shop!

This is also a good time to download the My Disney Experience app if you haven't done so yet, and become familiar with its features. You'll use it to manage many aspects of your trip, including reservations, dining, park information, and Lightning Lane purchases.

60 DAYS BEFORE: DINING RESERVATIONS AND THE DETAILS THAT MATTER

For many families, this is one of the most important planning milestones! Disney World dining reservations generally open 60 days before arrival. Guests staying at eligible Disney Resort hotels can typically make reservations for the length of their stay, up to 10 nights, beginning 60 days before check-in. Eligibility and booking rules can vary, so confirm the current details before your reservation date.

Your checklist:

  • Know your dining reservation date and time. Put a reminder on your calendar and check the current booking rules for your stay. Not sure when this is, ask a helpful cast member through the chat service on the My Disney Experience website.

  • Book your must-do restaurants first. Prioritize the experiences that would be hardest to replace, such as a favorite character meal or a special celebration dinner.

  • Have backup choices ready. Popular restaurants can fill quickly, and flexibility can make all the difference.

  • Review any dietary or accessibility needs. Check official dining information and contact Disney where needed to understand available accommodations.

  • Confirm park plans around dining. Allow enough time to get between locations and avoid building a day that has your family crisscrossing the resort.

Don't panic if your first-choice restaurant isn't available! Guests change plans, and reservations can become available later. Keep checking when it makes sense, but don't let one unavailable meal derail the whole trip. 30 DAYS BEFORE: GET ORGANIZED AND START PREPARING

One month to go! 🎉 You can officially start counting down, but before you get swept up in the excitement, take a little time to review your plans. This is when we like to move from researching possibilities to making sure the practical details are in place.

Your checklist:

  • Review your park itinerary. Make sure each day has a manageable plan and that you haven't scheduled too many big activities back-to-back.

  • Check park hours and entertainment details. Review official schedules as they become available, including fireworks, shows, and any separately ticketed events.

  • Review Lightning Lane booking rules. When you can book depends on your resort or hotel, ticket type, and other factors. Check Disney's current rules so you know when your booking window opens and can plan ahead! Have questions? Use the chat feature on Disney's website to get help from a Cast Member.

  • Confirm transportation arrangements. Check flight times, airport transfers, parking plans, and any rental car reservations.

  • Check your resort reservation. Make sure your dates and room details are correct and that you know how to access your confirmation.

  • Start your packing list. Think comfy walking shoes, lightweight clothing, rain gear, sunscreen, portable chargers, and all those everyday essentials your family can't live without! Check out our Disney Essentials list earlier in this post for ideas on what to pack to make your trip a little easier.

  • Check the weather as your travel dates approach. Florida weather can change quickly, so plan for heat, rain, and cooler evenings or mornings when appropriate.

  • Make a plan for groceries and snacks. Decide whether you'll bring a few essentials or arrange a grocery delivery to your accommodation.

A little reminder: You do not need to purchase every upgrade or add-on to enjoy Disney World. Decide what matters to your family, understand the costs, and spend your money where it will make the biggest difference to your vacation.

7 DAYS BEFORE: LIGHTNING LANE AND FINAL CHECKS

You're getting close! This is the time to confirm your final plans, make eligible Lightning Lane purchases when your booking window opens, and get everyone ready for the trip. Disney currently allows eligible Disney Resort hotel Guests and certain other hotel Guests to purchase Lightning Lane passes beginning 7 days before their stay. Other Guests generally have a 3-day advance purchase window, with details depending on admission type. The window opens at 7:00 a.m. Eastern Time on the applicable first day of eligibility. Check Disney's official Lightning Lane information for the latest rules.

Your checklist:

  • Confirm your Lightning Lane eligibility date. Don't assume everyone has the same booking window.

  • Make your Lightning Lane selections if you plan to purchase passes. Prioritize the attractions that matter most and review the available arrival windows before purchasing.

  • Check the My Disney Experience app. Make sure your party is linked correctly and that everyone has the necessary admission associated with their plans.

  • Review your dining reservations. Check times, locations, cancellation policies, and any special requirements.

  • Confirm flights and transportation. Review departure times, baggage allowances, check-in instructions, and transfer details.

  • Finish your packing list. Gather park essentials and any medications, chargers, travel documents, or other necessities.

  • Talk through the plan with your family. Let everyone know what to expect, which days will be busy, and where you have left room for breaks.

If you're staying off-site or using a ticket type with different eligibility rules, double-check your specific Lightning Lane purchase window. Official details can change, and having the right date on your calendar makes planning much easier.

1-2 DAYS BEFORE: THE FINAL DISNEY WORLD VACATION CHECKLIST

It's almost time! By now, most of the big planning decisions should be complete. The goal is to avoid unnecessary last-minute scrambling so you can start your vacation feeling excited rather than frazzled.

Your checklist:

  • Check the weather forecast. Adjust your clothing and park bag for the conditions.

  • Charge your devices and portable batteries. Your phone will be especially useful for managing plans throughout the day. Bring a portable battery pack!

  • Double check the My Disney Experience app. Log in and confirm you can access your plans.

  • Save important confirmation details. Keep hotel, flight, transportation, and ticket information somewhere easy to find.

  • Pack your park bags. Keep essentials accessible without making your bag unnecessarily heavy.

  • Choose comfortable shoes and travel outfits. A little preparation can make an early travel morning much smoother.

  • Review your arrival-day plan. Allow time for transportation, check-in, meals, and settling in.

  • Set expectations for the first day. If you arrive after a long journey, consider enjoying your resort instead of rushing straight into a park.

One of our favorite pieces of advice is to give yourself permission to ease into the vacation. Your arrival day doesn't have to be packed with activities to feel special. Sometimes the best start is a relaxed meal, a walk around your resort, or a little time by the pool.

DURING YOUR DISNEY WORLD VACATION: KEEP THE PLAN FLEXIBLE

You've done the research, booked the big experiences, and packed the bags. Now it's time to enjoy the trip! Even the best-planned Disney vacation won't always go exactly as expected. Weather changes, attractions experience downtime, kids get tired, and sometimes a spontaneous stop turns into one of the highlights of the day.

A few things to remember:

  • Check the app each morning. Review park hours, wait times, dining reservations, and any updates that affect your plans.

  • Stay hydrated and take breaks. Florida heat and long park days can be tiring, especially for younger children.

  • Be willing to change course. If everyone is exhausted, a slower afternoon may be better than forcing another attraction.

  • Leave room for spontaneous fun. Not every magical moment needs to be scheduled.

  • Keep expectations realistic. You probably won't experience every attraction, restaurant, and show in one trip, and that's okay!

  • Take pictures, but enjoy the moment, too. Some memories are worth experiencing without worrying about capturing every second.

Remember, the perfect Disney vacation isn't about checking off every item on your list. It's about creating an experience your family will love, whether that means riding a favorite attraction for the third time, discovering a new snack, or watching your kids light up when they see their favorite Disney character.
